China's Auto Export Map Shifts: Mexico & UAE Rise as Russia Fades | Jan-May 2025 Overview

According to the latest customs data, China exported 2.83 million vehicles from January to May 2025, a 16% increase year-on-year. Among these, 1.16 million were new energy vehicles (NEVs), surging 33%. In May alone, 682,000 vehicles were exported (+20% YoY), including 296,000 NEVs (+43% YoY).

While total exports continue to grow, the geographic structure is undergoing a major realignment—with traditional markets receding and new hubs accelerating.

Russia’s Rapid Decline Once China’s top auto export destination in 2023–2024, Russia fell to third place between January–May 2025, with only 153,664 units exported—a 59% drop year-on-year. In May, exports fell further to just 21,925 units (-79% YoY), ranking ninth.

Key Factors Behind the Slowdown:

  • Tighter import policies: higher tariffs, recycling taxes, and certification standards

  • Saturating demand after the 2024 sales boom

  • High interest rates (auto loans up to 26%) and complex trade settlements

  • Inventory digestion phase among local dealers

  • Inadequate vehicle adaptation to harsh climates, affecting durability perception

New Leaders: Mexico & UAE Take Over Meanwhile, Mexico and the UAE have emerged as China’s top two export markets. Other countries like Australia, Saudi Arabia, and the Philippines also saw notable growth.

  • Mexico: 1 market with 239,709 units exported

  • UAE: 2 with 189,547 units, reflecting strong demand for both conventional and new energy vehicles

This geographic rebalancing highlights the agility of Chinese automakers in adapting to global trade dynamics and evolving demand patterns.

What’s Next? As trade barriers rise and regional policies shift—such as Mexico’s proposed tariff increases—localized production and deeper market integration will be essential to sustain growth.

China’s auto export story is no longer just about volume—it’s about diversification, resilience, and strategic market selection.
